The Butterfly

An industry friend of mine recently wrote: “Greatness is forged through adversity. It has always been that way.” This comment spawned some conversation regarding the nature of mankind to seek the path of least resistance and thereby circumvent the very obstacles that may strengthen them and allow them to become their best selves. Nonetheless, it is true that we learn the most and become the strongest when we allow ourselves to go THROUGH the challenges that life sends our way. In light of this conversation, I am reminded of the following story:

“A man found a cocoon of a butterfly. One day a small opening appeared. He sat and watched the butterfly for several hours as it struggled to squeeze its body through the tiny hole. Then it stopped, as if it couldn't go further.”

“So the man decided to help the butterfly. He took a pair of scissors and snipped off the remaining bits of cocoon. The butterfly emerged easily but it had a swollen body and shriveled wings.”

“The man continued to watch it, expecting that any minute the wings would enlarge and expand enough to support the body. Neither happened! In fact the butterfly spent the rest of its life crawling around. It was never able to fly.”

“What the man in his kindness and haste did not understand: The restricting cocoon and the struggle required by the butterfly to get through the opening was a way of forcing the fluid from the body into the wings so that it would be ready for flight once that was achieved.”

“Sometimes struggles are exactly what we need in our lives. Going through life with no obstacles would cripple us. We will not be as strong as we could have been and we would never fly.”

As we look to build our businesses we will most certainly be faced with adversity. You will undoubtedly run into people who tell you “No” and others that will try to undo your dreams. You will have some good days but also many bad. You will find yourself at times wanting to quit. It is at those very times that you should remember the butterfly and recommit yourself to go THROUGH the obstacles that may stand in your way. In going through them you will find your best self on the other side.

Change how you think

Zig Ziglar said, “You can get everything in life you want if you just help enough other people get what they want.”

Remember, our job is to offer; their job is to accept or decline.

Develop an Abundant Mindset

Ask yourself, “What will have the biggest impact on my business over the next year?” The true answer is your mindset. The one characteristic that all top Network marketers share is that they have the abundant mindset. They spend time on it daily.

When you start to shift your mindset into abundance everything will impactful. The bigger your mindset the bigger the impact you can have.

Make a conscious choice to change how you think and most importantly feel about your business! Write down what you’d really like to experience in your business. Write down what the qualities are that you’d like to experience in your life.

In a Harvard Business School study on goals, only 3% of the US population have written goals. The 3% who have goals and have written them down have earned 10x more than the other 97%.

Make sure you associate with like-minded, positive people. Which people most support your work and/or your passions? Are there ways in which you could get more support from them? Write those down.

You can have whatever mindset you want, so why not choose a profitable and abundant one?

Be an information provider

Successful network marketers are not really salesmen but information providers.

Many people think it will take a lot of time and they will have to learn how to sell something which they are uncomfortable with. The truth of the matter is, a person can start a home business with 7 to 10 hours per week and should never try to sell anything. If the work is productive and approached with the right attitude and mind-set it can be done with minimal time invested. There are free advertising methods that require more of a time investment and there are paid methods that don’t require much time at all.

If a person is trying to sell their business opportunity they will resort to chasing and convincing. A network marketer simply needs to learn how to locate potential prospects and supply them with the information necessary for them to convince themselves it is a good opportunity. If the timing is right and the sponsor is the right leader for the prospect to partner up with, the prospect will sign up.

In the end people join with the person who is a leader so to be successful in this industry you simply have to train yourself to be a leader. If you get the right training you can cut years off the learning curve.

Do yourself a favor and treat your business the same way all serious business owners treat their business. Get training and study everything you can to learn the best methods of the trade.

The 91st Minute

By now, most sports fans around the world know the name Landon Donovan. A few days ago, perhaps not.

Yesterday morning, I awoke with a sense of nervousness. The U.S. World Cup soccer team was about to begin a do or die match against Algeria. Win, and the Americans would advance to the Round of 16. Lose and go home. The stakes were high.

In the first half, an American go ahead goal was disallowed due to an offside call that no one with a pair of functioning eyes could possibly agree with. This on the heels of another suspiciously disallowed game winning goal in the previous US match against Slovenia, the reasons for which have still not been explained. Soon news broke that England was up 1-0 over Slovenia, which further cemented the necessity for a US win against Algeria.

As the match wore on, the US team had chance after chance after chance to score. One scoring chance that I recall involved a wide open net. The Americans were dominating the flow of the game, but kept missing after coming so close so many times on a potential go ahead goal. And of course, the disallowed goal from the phantom offside call grew in importance. After 90 minutes, the score was USA 0 Algeria 0.

As some of you may know, soccer is played in two 45 minute halves. After the 90th minute, when the actual game time has elapsed, the referee will typically add a few minutes of “stoppage time” in allowance for substitutions, time wasting, injuries, etc. Stoppage time became do or die time.

With the hopes of a nation a hemisphere away pinned squarely on its back, the US team again came with relentless effort to begin stoppage time. At this point, I admit, my faith was faltering. But fortunately for me, faith still burned in the hearts of the 11 Americans on the field. In the 91st minute of the game, American midfielder Landon Donovan set up a scoring opportunity after streaking down the field. When the shot was deflected, he was perfectly positioned for the rebound. In arguably the most dramatic moment in the history of American soccer, Donovan kicked the ball into the back of the net. Reactions all across America can be summarized by this YouTube video I saw today which shows the reaction to Donovan’s goal in a bar in Lincoln, Nebraska. (goal at the 55 second point):

When most of the world had lost hope in the American team, they kept it. Through adversity, trial and error, and gut wrenching near misses, they kept their belief. And in the 91st minute, they made history. Regardless of what happens to this American team now, they have made a nation proud and etched their place into World Cup lore.

Seven Point Creed

Earlier this month, John Wooden, arguably the most successful basketball coach in NCAA history, passed away. As Coach Wooden was laid to rest I reflected on some of his greatest accomplishments, including an unprecedented and never duplicated 10 NCAA titles in a 12 year period. More importantly, I reflected on his role as a teacher, motivator, and master of success principles. More important than those 10 championships were the hundreds of players and hundreds of thousands of fans whose lives were changed through his words.

I am one of those. When I was a young man my father gave me a copy of Wooden’s book entitled “They Call Me Coach.” This book introduced me, for the first time, to Wooden’s Pyramid of Success and his Seven Point Creed. Each of these philosophies has had a positive impact on my life. As you can see below, the Seven Point Creed doesn’t even mention the sport of basketball and can be applied to any part of our lives, including our network marketing business:

• Be true to yourself
• Make each day your masterpiece
• Help others
• Drink deeply from good books
• Make friendship a fine art
• Build a shelter against a rainy day
• Pray for guidance and give thanks for your blessings every day

A few years after reading the book my father gave me, I had the privilege of meeting Coach Wooden when he was in attendance at a local college basketball game. There I was, face to face with the man whose words had become a big part of my own personal philosophies, an encounter that, to this day, ranks as one the top moments in my life. It was more than an opportunity to meet someone famous. Instead, it was the rare opportunity to connect with a mentor and the source of great philosophical advice – advice that would have made no difference in my life had I chosen to ignore it or not effectively incorporate it into my actions.

I encourage each of you to make of yourselves the best person that you can by striving every day to do your best and to live by a creed of your own. If you don’t have one, borrow the things Coach Wooden shared with the rest of the world. I did, and it has never guided me wrong.

The word no

Many people in our industry wonder how best to deal with rejection. Many times they feel frustrated when they don’t see the fruits of their labors. Let’s take a closer look at the word no.

You call a friend and ask him to go out for lunch with you and he says, “No.” Has she rejected YOU or has she rejected your OFFER? What has changed in your life? Did you have someone to go out to eat with before you called him? No. Do you have someone to go out to eat with after you called her? No. Absolutely nothing in your life has changed.

What is your reaction to your friend saying no going to be? Are you going to cry? Are you going to not eat? Are you never going to talk to him again? Of course not! You know your friend didn’t reject you – he rejected the offer to go out for lunch.

This example is so obvious to everyone, and most people even chuckle when they hear it. Everyone knows it’s true – nothing has changed in their life and their friend was rejecting the offer.

But it seems to be difficult for many of us to pick up the phone and make business calls and hear no, no, no, no, no, no, and no. We start personalizing it. We start feeling rejected. We start feeling like failures. It’s sometimes hard to remember they haven’t rejected us – they are rejecting what we are offering them.

The issue is – how can we change it? How can we change our thinking around hearing no when we are doing business calls? Might I suggest that instead of fearing the no you welcome it? You do that by purposely looking for no - collecting them if you will. Yes, that’s right – collect no’s. When you need to get on the phone, what would happen to your business if you collected no’s? Could you collect 2, 3, 5. or even 10 no’s? In other words, you’re going to make calls until you hear your magic number of no’s. So if you decide to collect 5 no’s you’re going to be calling people to talk to you about your business, or try a new product and you’re going to stop when 5 people have said no to you. What will happen is, along the way you are also going to be hearing yes.

What would happen in your business if you did this for a week, two weeks, or even for a month? You would have all the recruits and sales you want.

212 degrees

At 211 degrees, water is hot. At 212 degrees, it boils. And with boiling water, comes steam. And steam can power a locomotive. Wow! Just one little degree of heat makes all the difference between a powerful locomotive moving or standing still.

Vince Lombardi, Hall of Fame Football Coach, who coached the Green Bay Packers said, “Inches make a champion.”

The point here is little things do matter. It’s the little things that make the difference between the winner and the one who comes in second. What are some little things you could do in your business that would make a difference? Could you make one more phone call? Could you send out one thank-you note a day to someone and invite him to join you in your Elur business? Could you talk to one person a day about joining your team? Could you read an inspirational book for 15 minutes a day? Could you participate in one event a day? Could you listen to one motivational recording a day?

What is one little thing you could do to increase your business? Plan your day and then do 1% more.

Finding your Grant

Only ten days before Abraham Lincoln took the oath of office in 1961, the Confederate States of America seceded from the Union, taking all Federal agencies, forts, and arsenals within their territory. On top of this challenge, Lincoln had been elected in spite of receiving only a minority of the popular vote and many of his own advisors despised him. He had no military training and had limited managerial and political experience. Against all of these odds, Lincoln became one of the best known and most successful presidents in US history.

How did he do it? Lincoln became great by surrounding himself with those who had the expertise he lacked and leading them. This wasn’t always an easy process. He struggled a great deal and sorted through many candidates to find the ideal General to lead the Union Army. Ultimately, he found Ulysses S. Grant, who not only led the Union to victory but eventually became president as well.

From this short recollection of American history, we can take a couple of valuable lessons that apply to our world of network marketing. First, leaders know that they must sift through many in order to find the few who will actually build the business. This means that leaders are always looking for the next person to enroll. They don’t pre-judge or pre-qualify. Leaders understand that not everyone they enroll will engage in the business. Some will buy some product, some will try to work a little, and some won’t do anything, but the numbers are on your side! The more you enroll the more likely you are to find your “Grants” - those leaders that will help you build your team.

Second, this situation teaches us to not only look for numbers but to look for quality. Now, I have heard it said that in numbers you will eventually find quality, and this is true, but how will we find quality if we don’t know what we are looking for. I am confident that Lincoln knew all along what type of general he was trying to find.

So, what does the prototypical network marketing leader look like? Unfortunately, there is not a specific mold. They don’t have a specific educational degree. They don’t go through a specific training or have some necessary amount of money in their bank account. They don’t dress a certain a way or drive a certain car. They come from every possible background you can think of. However, there are some common traits among network marketing leaders and some specific things that they know and live by.

1. Leaders know that they can only truly lead by EXAMPLE. You must be a doer of your word.
2. Leaders therefore must be ACTIVE BUILDERS and always be inviting new people to join their organizations.
3. Leaders know they must engage in the business EVERY DAY.
4. Leaders know that their organizations grow best when others DUPLICATE their efforts.
5. Leadership comes from the HEART. You must love and be passionate about what you do.
6. Leaders SHARE their knowledge with others via training, webinars, conference calls, etc.
7. Leaders ATTEND ALL EVENTS, which includes corporate calls, webinars and other training events.

I have had the privilege of working with some of the best and brightest leaders in the network marketing industry and know that all of those who achieved great success embodied the traits above. Not only should we all strive to follow their example, we should also be looking for those around us who already exhibit these same traits.

I will make you a promise. If you will work to build your organization every day with patience and persistence, you will be successful in network marketing. But! You can’t expect it to happen overnight. It will take time. Those who can continually do the things listed above over a long period of time have the greatest opportunity to achieve financial independence with Elur.
